Central Ohio History

Columbus is located in Central Ohio and is the capital of the state. We are currently the 15th largest city in the US and offer a diverse array of things to do and see.

Columbus was not the original capital of Ohio as the capital was originally Chillicothe before being moved to Zanesville. Eventually it was decided to move the capital to the center of the state and Columbus was named the capital around 1812.

The original statehouse was opened in 1857.

What would later become The Ohio State University was originally named Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College and founded in 1870.

Columbus was refereed to as The Arch City, during the start of the 20th centry as it had wooden arches along High Street.

The city is now made up of several Neighborhoods. Some more popular areas include the Campus and Arena district, Franklinton, The Short North, Italian Village, German Village and Victorian Village.

Several great suburbs surround the city including Westerville, Gahhana, Hillard, and Dublin.

Columbus is home to two professional sporting teams, The Blue Jackets (NHL) and The Crew (MLS).

The Ohio State Fair is held in Columbus and is one of the largest fairs in the country.
